David Miller passed away suddenly at home on Oct. 2, 2022, working in his yard in Edmonds. It was certainly an Edmonds Kind of Day, and he was enjoying his yard and family on a warm, sunny fall day.
He was an extraordinary human being with a head full of baseball stats, a heart full of love for his family, loads of talent at the end of his fingertips.
He was always the art director, the job boss on our mutual landscaping jobs, site manager when I was learning the ends and outs of remodeling a new home. A note taker, instruction reader when we were learning how to take care of a newborn.
I think his proudest, most happy moments when he spent years with Matt during the "little league" phase of our lives with the Pacific Little League. I cooked hot dogs at the "snack shack" and David kept meticulous records on batting order and stats for the kids.
I never understood the passion with baseball, but I was just glad he had it and got to enjoy it with his son.
I know he passed on his good intentions and ethics to his son, Matthew. He was so proud of the father he had become. His grandkids were the light; he was drawn to them like a moth.
He had a long career in the newspaper industry: Kansas City Star, Denver Post, San Jose Mercury News and The Seattle Times. For the last many years he was the creative director for Seattle Times Pacific Magazine. He was an airbrush illustrator, graphic designer, and writer.

David is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kim Carney; his son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Bri Miller; his two much-loved granddaughters, Mason and Noah; his sister, Kate Nelson in New Mexico; and brother, Barry Miller, in Kansas.
Whenever we faced a challenge, David would assure me, "It's going to be OK." That has become my mantra these last few weeks as friends, family, and colleagues have reached out to me. If you feel called to do something in his memory, please donate to the Edmonds Food Bank.
