Everyone knows about the Titanic. Almost no one has heard of the Sultana.

The Titanic sinking claimed more than 1,500 souls. It was worldwide news.

But fifty years earlier, the Sultana tragedy was barely noticed.

The tragedy happened April 27, 1865. But it was lost amid other news: John Wilkes Booth was killed the day before following a 10-day manhunt, his life extinguished in a fiery shootout. Gen. Joseph Johnston surrendered the last large Confederate army still in field the same day.

The Sultana tragedy remained on a back page, if it was reported at all.
