Mayor needs to speak up on police chief decision | Letter to the Editor

The position of Edmonds Chief of Police is arguably one of the most important positions in our local government structure – good management of our police force bears directly on our safety and security.

The continuing lack of clarity and transparency by Mayor Mike Nelson about his reasoning for bypassing Assistant Chief Lawless for the police chief position is causing continuing angst in our community. In reflecting on what has brought us to this point, the following points occurred to me:

And you are surprised. I'm not. If I had to guess I would say...The mayor and lawless do not agree possibly on who should be cited and who shouldn't. I would guess Lawless (my choice) would want to be a policeman...where MIKE would prefer Seattle Style law and order...which is cleary not a good idea, regardless of this idealistic lets just talk to them attitude. He would want police protection and response for citizens here. It is quite clear I think...
