Rick Steves: Employee volunteerism good for the community

Keith Stickelmaier volunteers 16 hours a week while on the clock as a paid employee at Rick Steves' Europe. He delivers meals and groceries to homebound seniors through a program at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center.

It's been a difficult seven months for Edmonds European travel guide Rick Steves as the coronavirus has severely impacted his budget – and his staff.

In May, he announced that his office staff would be working at about 80% (4 days a week). Then, beginning in January, they will be working at 60% (3 days a week) until European tourism returns.

So what is Steves doing to help his staff stay busy in Edmonds?

The answer: He created the Rick Steves Volunteer Corps.

"Like so many other businesses – especially in the travel industry – the pandemic has hit my company really hard," Steves said....
