Between 1997 and 2019, Washington and Oregon had 26 fires over 100,000 acres. This week, we have eight.
This is not a normal year.
A month ago, it looked like the Pacific Northwest was going to get away with another year of low wildfires, like we did in 2019. Then everything changed ¬– three fires in Washington over 100,000 acres, five in Oregon, smoke choking the region.
What happened? Did we see it coming?
