Missing the fair – literally | Home Again

As the season winds down for county and state fairs, I’m reflecting on past visits to fairs I’ve enjoyed, from Cashmere to Phoenix. My favorites are the smaller ones, where it’s possible to see just about everything before it feels like time to go home – baby goats, patchwork quilts, apple pies and pear preserves, kids’4-H projects – and dahlias the size of dinner plates.
Grand champions and honorable mentions, and bright ribbons everywhere. I appreciate that fairs tend to retain the same wholesome flavor of those I attended with my grandparents a long time ago. Hamburgers and...
