In Edmonds: Delicious food options at the Saturday market

 

Vespucci Pizza, and its pizza oven, are always at hit during Edmonds’ farmers markets.

Going to a weekend farmers market usually means finding local produce, flowers, breads, handmade gifts, and products from close to home.

My favorite part of a spring or summer market, though, is the consolidation of options for a fresh breakfast or lunch on a Saturday morning to start the weekend off right.

The Edmonds Garden Market (or as many of us call it, the mini-Market) opens the first Saturday of May every year and is the precursor to the full Summer Market that begins in June.

Other Saturday options in Snohomish County include Bothell, Stanwood, Snohomish, and Marysville, but they do not open until June, Arlington in July.

You can go to Everett on Sundays, and a few other cities, like Mukilteo, have midweek markets.

This year, the Edmonds Historical Museum reorganized the market, and all three of its dining options are grouped together along the base of the Edmonds Veterans Plaza on Bell Street and Fifth Avenue North.

Right on the corner, the tent of Vespucci Pizza houses its huge pizza oven, while Falafel Salam and Los Chilangos are just a few steps to the north in their new food trucks.

On the first weekend of the market, we arrived a little later than usual, closer to noon, after a healthy oatmeal breakfast, and so we felt we had a guilt-free mandate for pizza.

Vespucci’s makes pizza the way I remember it growing up.

On the East Coast, pizza has a thin crust, but not too crunchy. You have to fold the pizza just slightly, into the shape of a “V” to keep all of the cheese stable on top of the fresh tomato sauce. Samuele Lucchese, who always has a smile on his face, and his crew, make fresh and fabulous versions of a variety of pizzas.

They start with a base of homemade tomato sauce and on the Stella, sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top (simple and perfect, as pizza should be). Or you can try the Margherita (fresh mozzarella and basil), Mario (pepperoni), or Fabio (olives, artichoke hearts, mozzarella, ham, and mushrooms), all made fresh there in the pizza oven (huge slices from $6-$8).

Week two, it was the opposite situation.

We were there early and had not eaten a thing, so we made a beeline for the breakfast burritos ($10) at Los Chilangos. The huge flour tortilla is filled with scrambled organic eggs, cheese, beans, your choice of meat or veggies, and pico de gallo and salsa.

We went for the spicy veggie and sat happily on a bench enjoying every bite – a variety of grilled vegetables and just right ratio of beans to cheese to eggs. They also serve chilaquiles con huevos ($12) – one of the world’s most perfect breakfasts – quesadillas ($10), and street tacos ($7.50).

Last year, we ate most often at the Market’s third option, Falafel Salam. Their made-from-scratch Middle-Eastern fare is in a word, delicious.

I could eat falafel every day, and especially the way they make it at Salam. You start by choosing your vehicle (pita wrap or salad), then add either falafel, mezze (veggies), chicken, or lamb gyro (from $9 to $13), and finish it off with one of their two tasty sauces.

It’s hard not to go for their large combo meals (a gigantic combo plate called The Hesitator for $14, or the rice bowl for $10). Don’t forget to make room for the outstanding sides (fries, dolmas, or salad), oh, and dessert (halva mousse and baklava).

Just yummy!

No matter what you choose, the beautiful Edmonds Veterans Plaza offers seating among the understated and welcoming tribute to veterans to enjoy a rest or a meal, and kids are endlessly entertained by the water features.

See you at the food trucks next Saturday, some time between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., as we try, once again, to make what we hope to be the most difficult decision of the weekend – what to eat.
