Voting: Your right, your privilege, on Nov. 6 | Mayor's Corner

Last updated 11/2/2018 at Noon

A couple of times a year we, as citizens of the United States of America, have the privilege of voting.

Yes, we are in an "off-year" election, a phrase that, quite frankly, puzzles me. For me, there is no "off year," because we as Americans must understand that every election is important.

I believe I have missed only one election in the past 25 years.

Whether national, municipal, county, school district or special election, I vote and believe we all have an opportunity and obligation to express ourselves in the democratic process at the ballot box.

The privilege becomes even more important when current events intersect with national and international events.

Whether it is the murder of a Saudi Arabian citizen with residence in our country, an American citizen sending pipe bombs to political leaders and private citizens with the clear intent to kill, or the tragedy of 11 Jewish citizens killed in their place of worship in Pittsburgh, we need to sit up and take notice that our voice and vote is in fact important.

We should all acknowledge and share in the grief of each incident, mourn the loss of life in each incident, the pain of the families of each incident.

And we do.

But somewhere in there we must also better express our concern for the lacking moral compass of leadership and take steps to be sure our voices are heard.

If you are a registered voter you should – no – you must exercise at this very important moment, your right to vote and let elected leadership know we have higher expectations.

Nov. 6 is upon us.
