Warriors return plenty of talent | Girls basketball

August 16, 2018

It might be a slight exaggeration, but the Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball team must have seemed like a well-oiled machine this summer.

The Warriors returned all of their key players from last year’s district playoff squad. The experience translated into solid performances on the court, as Edmonds-Woodway finished third in the Edmonds Summer Shootout and took second in its division at the Western Washington basketball camp.

“We had no seniors. We returned the whole squad,” Warriors coach Jon Rasmussen said. “They’ve been pretty easy to work with.”

The Edmonds-Woodway coach noted that all of the players also play for select teams, so the summer was more a matter of working on team chemistry rather than skill development.

“It’s getting the team back together and working on team bonding,” Rasmussen said.

Some of the time also was spent reviewing the Warriors’ offensive and defensive schemes.

“A lot of my team play select AAU,” Rasmussen said. “So I don’t have to worry about them not being in the gym.”

Rasmussen said that the whole team squad played well throughout the summer and up at Western Washington.

“It was very much a team effort,” he said.

Senior Adrienne Poling had an especially strong performance at team camp. Returning point guard/junior AJ Martineau is continuing to run the offense well, Rasmussen said.

“Rebekah Dasalla-Good, I thought, improved in the offseason,” he added. “She came in with a lot of confidence and had a very good summer.”

The plan is for the Warriors to join a fall league in preparation for the start of the season in November.

Rasmussen realizes that upcoming year is shaping up to be special with the number of returning starters and key players off the bench.

“I’ve never returned my whole team,” Rasmussen said. “It’s been a delight. Everyone knows everything. I’m not teaching any new. … I can’t ask for a better situation. It doesn’t happen often.”
