Edmonds-Woodway claims state tournament berth | Softball

Edmonds-Woodway punched its ticket to the state softball tournament and exacted a little payback on a familiar foe.

The Warriors edged Everett 4-3 in a winner-to-state 3A District tournament game Tuesday, May 15, at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett. The Seagulls defeated Edmonds-Woodway 5-4 in a mid-April matchup.

The Warriors (15-7) advance to the district championship game against Snohomish at 6 p.m., Friday, May 18, at Phil Johnson Fields. The Panthers defeated the Warriors 5-3 earlier this season.

Everett took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Edmonds-Woodway senior Ciara Ortiz hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. The Warriors took a 4-2 lead in the sixth on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Sofia Chamorro. Everett scored a run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3 and had the bases loaded with two outs before Edmonds-Woodway recorded the final out.

The Warriors opened district play with a 22-2 blowout victory over Arlington.

This will be Edmonds-Woodway’s third trip to state in the last four years.

District rival Meadowdale’s bid for a seventh straight trip to the state tournament took a hit with the Mavericks’ 12-1 loss to Marysville-Pilchuck. The Mavericks take on Marysville-Getchell in a loser-out contest at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 17 at Phil Johnson Fields.

Meadowdale (13-8) will have to win three games to claim the district’s third and final berth to state.
