Paving project to improve SR 525

Overnight lane closures expected through December

Posted

Travelers using State Route 525 between Paine Field and the Mukilteo ferry terminal should expect overnight delays beginning Tuesday, July 28, as the Washington State Department of Transportation starts a roadway preservation project.

The project will repave SR 525 from just north of Paine Field Boulevard to the Mukilteo ferry terminal, a stretch of highway that carries about 15,000 vehicles daily. Crews also will build Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and make bicycle safety improvements.

Construction is expected to continue through the end of the year, weather permitting.

To reduce disruptions for ferry traffic, most work will occur at night. During construction, motorists can expect single-lane closures and alternating traffic through the work zone. Pedestrians also should expect detours using nearby city streets.

The section of highway was last resurfaced in 2000, well beyond the typical 15-year lifespan of asphalt pavement. WSDOT officials said the work is part of the agency's ongoing highway preservation program to extend the life of state roads.

The project covers about 3 miles of SR 525, from just north of Paine Field Boulevard to the ferry terminal.

Travelers can check current traffic conditions through the WSDOT mobile app or the agency's online real-time travel map before heading to the ferry or traveling through Mukilteo.

More information about the project is available on WSDOT's project webpage.
