Patrick Robinson Mahoney: 1939-2023

Patrick Robinson Mahoney, 84 of Brier, Washington, passed away on April 16, 2023, after a long illness.

Patrick was born on Feb. 9, 1939, to parents Harry and Gertrude Mahoney in Seattle,. He graduated from Morton High School in 1957 and studied Business Administration at Seattle University.

After graduating, Patrick started his first job at State Farm Insurance in Salem, Oregon. This started his journey towards a career in hospital administration. He moved his young family to Ketchikan, Alaska where he worked for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace at PeaceHealth Hospital as the Chief Financial Officer.

He earned a master's of Hospital Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Next was a move to Bellingham to become the administrator at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital.

Patrick become the new Administrator of St. Francis Catholic Hospital in Santa Barbara, California in 1978. He returned to the Pacific Northwest as the Chief Executive Officer of Ballard Community Hospital.

Patrick was the Chief Executive Officer of Skagit Valley Hospital from 1988 through 2002. During his time working in Washington State, Patrick was part of numerous professional health-care organizations: Washington State Hospital Association Board, Associated Washington Public Hospital Board, American College of Healthcare Executives Regents Council, Northwest Hospital Council: Board President, Seattle Hospital Council, WSHA Rural Committee and numerous WSHA committees and tasks forces.

Patrick was honored when he received the Joe Hopkins Memorial Award in 2000 for special focus on rural hospital leadership. He served on the Board of Regents at Seattle University. He received the Professional Achievement Award from Seattle University in 2001.

Patrick met Kathleen Marie Harding at Seattle University and they were married in 1964. Patrick and Kathleen have four children, Elizabeth, Molly, Anne and Daniel.

He shared entertaining, childhood adventures with what he called "Mapleton-Stories" with his children and grandchildren. He attended countless recitals and sporting events to support his children's extracurricular activities.

He coached basketball and soccer for his son Dan. He also used his deep bass voice in church choirs.

In 2002, Patrick retired from Skagit Valley Hospital and spent time volunteering for the Big Brother's organization, Skagit Hospice and hosted a radio show at KSER in Everett about Senior issues. Patrick sat on the Snohomish Council of Aging and was President of the State Council of Aging.

Patrick is survived by his wife, Kathleen, four children: Elizabeth Mahoney-Niven, Molly Ashe, Anne Mahoney-Ortiz, and Daniel Mahoney: sisters Caroline Shook and Pamela Fitterer; nine grandchildren, Lilliana, Michael, Meghan, Maddy, Vesper, Bryan, Tanner, Tomas and Mateo; numerous nieces, nephews, and one great-grandson, Julian.

A funeral mass and reception will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 630 7th Ave N., Edmonds, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2023. Arrangements made by Beck's Tribute Center in Edmonds.
