Posted

Ila Church, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and community member, passed away on March 16, 2023, at the age of 100. She leaves behind two children and three grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly.

Mom was born and raised on a farm in Bandon, Oregon, on May 27, 1922. She was the youngest of five children, with three older brothers and one older sister. In high school she was active in sports and graduated with honors.

Soon after finishing school, she left home and found a job, putting herself through cosmetology school and eventually opening her own beauty salon. During this time, she met and married the love of her life, Burgund ("Burgy") Church, and enjoyed 65 years of marriage before he passed away in 2019.

Many happy times were spent with family at their cabin on Horseshoe Lake, and upon retirement they became snowbirds, traveling to Yuma, Arizona, every winter for 20 years.

Mom was an active member of the Women's Association at Edmonds Presbyterian Church for many years and dedicated her time and talent as a seamstress, sewing clothing and other items for various charities.

She had a passion for reading from a very young age and was an avid reader her entire life. Historical fiction was her favorite genre. She was also famous for her marionberry cobbler (a family favorite), and her Thanksgiving turkey was always a hit.

A family pinochle game was always a must after any family gathering and her competitive spirit, quick wit, and love for the game made for many memorable moments.

Mom had an unwavering strength, resilience, and positivity, which she demonstrated through her last days. Her family and friends will especially remember her kind heart, beautiful smile, and unwavering love for her family. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
