In December 2019, after working for some of the Pacific Northwest's largest corporations for 30 years, Rob Bingham's ears perked up when a business consultant mentioned Outdoor Lighting Perspectives (OLP) to him. As a Professional Project Manager (PMP™) with a Mechanical Engineering degree who'd worked in several different industries, this sounded like a perfect opportunity.
Since Rob has always been happiest spending his free time outside beautifying his yard, he and his wife, Beth, decided it's never too late to try something new. He traded his ID badge for a business license and the OLP North Sound franchise was born.
Rob has spent the past two years building the business and has never looked back.
"I love that I get to do something that puts me out in the community meeting people, bringing beauty and value to their homes, getting to use both my technical experience and my creative/visionary side. It's really the best of both worlds," he says.
He also loves being able to utilize his business for community outreach. He's donated to several local auctions, dressed an assisted living facility in holiday lights last Christmas, and always looks for opportunities to go above and beyond for his clients.
Some of the more unique projects he's been privileged to help with are the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival, the nativity scene at Warm Beach Lights of Christmas, and illuminating a 25-foot artistic representation of Lake Stevens' original water tower.
OLP North Sound's service area spans from the King County line up to the Canadian border. They specialize in professional-grade lighting for residential and commercial properties, HOA entrances, special events, and holiday lighting packages, which include installation, removal, and storage.
Bistro string lights are very popular, as well, especially since our mild PNW weather allows for almost-year-round outdoor time.
"One of my favorite things about what we do is taking an already-beautiful home/yard/deck and making it stunning after the sun goes down. Instead of a home's beauty disappearing at night, OLP's lighting designs and fixtures create an ambience that will make you want to linger outside, even after dark. It also adds security and improves safety for those pesky dark steps or pathways."
OLP North Sound prides itself on being a full-service solution to any of your lighting needs. They handle the consultation, design and demonstration (all complimentary), do all the installation, clean-up, lighting adjustments and long-term maintenance.
They will even service/repair a lighting system installed by someone else. One of the most popular services is the ever-popular nighttime demo. They bring battery-powered versions of their light fixtures to your home and show you exactly what their design will look like at night, before any final decisions are made or proposals signed.
"We want our clients to be part of the process of dialing in the lighting so it's perfect for them. Once the design is finalized and the lights are in, we just want them to enjoy it! If something goes wrong, we're there with one call to take care of it," says Rob.
All fixtures and transformers are fully warranted. They use professional-grade transformers, efficient LED technology, heavy gauge brass fixtures, and they offer convenient app-based control options (including color-changing abilities), at the touch of a button.
OLP North Sound's Senior Technician, Bill Linville, is a highly-skilled craftsman with incredible attention to detail. He has over 30 years of experience in construction and outdoor lighting and is Rob's right-hand man. They love coming up with solutions to design challenges, including elements such as using copper tubing to hide wiring or creating custom enclosures to shield the light source so you don't see the wiring and access holes.
They also have other technicians that help with bigger projects and, in the summer months, Rob also provides employment opportunities to local high school kids to get some hands-on experience in the trades.
Rob and Beth have two daughters, Sydney (20) and Amanda (18). Beth is Rob's biggest cheerleader, who works does medical/insurance transcription and is a freelance writer. Sydney attends WSU, and Amanda will graduate from high school next year.
Rob and Beth love to travel and have talked about, after retirement, taking a year to tour the U.S. in a motorhome. Rob is a great cook (thanks to his Italian genes), can fix anything, loves classic rock, took up guitar in his 40s, and hopes to have more time in the next few years to work on getting his golf handicap back in the single digits.
Outdoor Lighting Perspectives is the largest professional landscape lighting company in North America. They have been in business for over 20 years, and there are currently more than 80 locations nationally and abroad.
Look for OLP North Sound's fancy vans around town and give them a wave if you see them!
