The towering giants in our midst | Greener Edmonds

We take for granted these gigantic green things that surround us.
Edmonds is smack in the middle of the world’s largest temperate rain forest. It has the highest biomass, or total amount of life, per acre of anywhere on earth, and nowhere else is even close.
Wild areas of Western Washington are dominated by coniferous forests. Douglas fir, true firs, western hemlock, western red cedar, and Sitka spruce make up most of the wood volume. Throw in a few trees that go naked in the winter – like big leaf maple, red alder, and black cottonwood – and there we have a northwest forest.
