A cultural revival: Blue Heron Canoe departs Edmonds on Healing Water Paddle

The Blue Heron and the Willapa Spirit depart from the Edmonds Waterfront Center Aug. 2.

Blue Heron Canoe, a collective group of students and adults who participate in Indigenous ceremonial journeys, wowed onlookers Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Edmonds Waterfront Center.

The Healing Water Paddle is part of a cultural revival of the tribal canoe journey.

There was sharing of prayer, ceremony, stories, jokes, gift-making, song, and dance, led by Blue Heron Canoe patriarch Mike Evans ("didahalqid").

On Sunday, Aug. 2, paddlers paddled away from the Waterfront Center en route to Camano Island, La Conner, and the San Juan Islands, with a planned finish at Lummi Island. There were two cano...
