UPDATED 9:25 p.m. Aug. 3.

The first results from the 2021 primary election show that City Council Position 1 incumbent Kristiana Johnson has a small lead over challengers Alicia Crank and Brian Hartman.

In Position 2, both candidates Janelle Cass and Will Chen are leading incumbent Luke Distelhorst and Lora Petso.

The top two candidates in each race advance to the Nov. 2 general election.

“While the numbers are still coming in, I’m so grateful for the strong showing of support from the community,” said Crank.

“We are really happy with tonight's returns so far,” said Chen. “It's a testament to the hard work of our campaign team and all the volunteers, businesses, Edmonds residents and friends and family.

“I'm not standing alone in this race for a better Edmonds. It's just proof that running a clean and honest campaign can yield solid outcomes. While I know these are just the early returns, our team looks forward to the final results, and I want to personally thank the Edmonds community for your support and for being active and engaged.

“No matter the final outcome of the election, at the end of the day we all want the same thing, and that is for Edmonds to thrive.”

Said Petso: “Obviously I am disappointed with the early numbers, but I am very grateful to everyone who supported me. I hope that I was able to draw attention to the need for planned – not random – growth, and to the need for improved council procedures.

“I am concerned that both of the candidates currently leading speak of ‘streamlining the development process.’ That usually means leaving out public notice and comment, or environmental review and SEPA review, or both.”

Port of Edmonds incumbent Steve Johnston has a large lead over two challengers, Scott Marshall and Selena Killin.

He has over 71% of the vote to retain his seat at commissioner at large, position 5. Marshall is second with 17%

The next results will be released 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Election results will be certified Aug. 17.
