"Those who don't know history are condemned to repeat it" has become a popular phrase among apologists for the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. The actual quote from George Santayana is, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

The context is that neo-Confederates don't want statues of Confederate generals torn down because they are a part of history. And I would agree with them if the historical context of the statues was included on a plaque.

Those statues were not placed because a battle had occurred at that location, or to commemorate a significant historic event...
