VFW to distribute poppies at May 29 Edmonds Garden Market

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8870 in Edmonds has once again been forced to modify its plans to distribute poppies in the community during Memorial Day weekend.
In the past, VFW members and its auxiliary have distributed poppies at local supermarkets during the weekend prior to Memorial Day. This year, it will have a booth Saturday, May 29, at the Edmonds Saturday Market.
Other locations in Edmonds, Mukilteo and Mill Creek are not available.
Those who don't visit at the market can donate online at http://www.vfw8870.org/donate, or by check to VFW Post 8870, PO Box 701, Edmonds WA 98020.
The poppy drive commemorates Memorial Day, which honors the memory of all the men and women who served in the military and have passed away, many who died while defending liberty and freedom.
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow" is the opening line of the poem "In Flanders Fields," written by Col. John McCrae to memorialize the men who fought and died during World War I.
Since then, the "Buddy" Poppy has become recognized as the symbol of all men and women who have given their lives in the defense of the country.
Nationwide, VFW posts have been distributing poppies to the public on Memorial Day weekend (as well as Veterans Day weekend). One hundred percent of the funds that are raised during this semiannual event are used, exclusively, to provide assistance to needy and disabled veterans and members of their families.
Services made possible through the generous donations of the public are made avail-able to all veterans, not just members of the VFW.
