'You get used to it'

Meadowdale seniors honored with 'Gown and Gauntlet' ceremony

From left: Seniors Samson Samuel, Tyler Suter, Farrah Padilla, and Sierra Moll all participated in a special pre-graduation ceremony at Meadowdale High School.

This school year was the first for Samson Samuel at Meadowdale High School, whose family was on vacation here last year and unable to return home to Eritrea in East Africa due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, March 12, he received his cap and gown as part of the school's "Gown and Gauntlet" drive-through ceremony. Teachers waved and cheered. Cheerleaders welcomed each car filled with soon-to-be graduates.

"It's a pretty nice school," said Samuel. "But I haven't seen the inside yet."

Samuel's experience is just another chapter in an enduring saga for high school students in the area,...
