Max McKinley, a real estate broker in Edmonds, has created a GoFundMe page – Edmonds Foodie Fund – to help local restaurants during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
"Our goal is to keep every hurting restaurant in business through COVID times, as we are a community and don't want to see anyone shut down," said McKinley, who created the page along with friend Ryan Hoff.
"With phase 2, there are still many places that can't and won't get by with only 25% capacity. Our first $2,300 and change went to Calypso, and man, what a feeling it was to see their faces and the emotion a few extra dollars can do."
"Their response was amazing. At first they couldn't accept it, as they knew what were doing from the start. I wasn't going to leave without their acceptance. Appreciation was out the roof."
McKinley and Hoff also delivered another check to Engel's Pub on Fifth Avenue South.
McKinley said he hopes his restaurant support will expand outside of the Bowl.
"If Fiver Corners or Westgate restaurants needed help, we would do our best to help them. Unfortunately, we can't do it alone. It needs to come from the whole community. And a lot of people are doing their part by ordering food from them weekly. But we thought this would only help more.
"What I want everyone to know if that there are no favorites here. It's all based on word of mouth and talking with the community on who might need it most. We hope to give at $1,000 to $3,000 check to every restaurant by the time COVID has come to a halt. As we both know that won't be for awhile, so keeping the momentum going is needed."
