Some students returning to class on March 22

The Edmonds School District and the Edmonds Education Association, which includes certificated teachers, have reached a tentative agreement on Stage 2 of its reentry plan.

Stage 2 offers in-person learning in the A/B hybrid model (students attend in-person either Mondays/Thursdays or Tuesdays/Fridays) for kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and additional special education and early childhood programs.

Families in Stage 2 must choose the in-person A/B hybrid model or to remain in fully remote learning.

Al Stage 2 students will begin with their new classes on Monday, March 22. That includes the students and staff staying fully remote. The district will do a gradual launch of in-person learning starting with second grade.

As some students wait to begin in-person learning in Stage 2, they will still start with their new class remotely on March 22 until their scheduled time to begin in-person learning.

Anticipated start dates

– March 22: Pre-K, kindergarten, first and second grades begin new class assignments; second grade begins in-person; elementary self-contained special education programs begin in-person.

– March 29: First grade begins in-person; Madrona Primary begins in-person.

– April 5-9: Spring break.

– April 12: Kindergarten begins in-person; early childhood education and assistance program begins in-person; Alderwood Early Learning Childhood Center begins in-person.

Westgate, Sherwood kindergartners to start at former Woodway Elementary

The Edmonds School District's Capacity Advisory Committee voted to recommend that the Edmonds School District move forward with a kindergarten campus to address overcrowding issues at Sherwood and Westgate elementary schools.

The advisory group (consisting of parents, teachers, principals, Edmonds Education Association president and central office staff) looked at both short-term and long-term solutions and also reviewed input and feedback from stakeholders.

The other option discussed was to move Sherwood and Westgate elementary sixth grade classrooms to College Place Middle. That move would have displaced Edmonds eLearning Academy.

After thoroughly looking into the options, the committee voted to move forward with opening a kindergarten campus at Former Woodway Elementary. This kindergarten campus is planned to open for Sherwood and Westgate kindergarteners for the 2021-2022 school year.
