Hazel Sherwood celebrated her 100th birthday in style.

The worldwide pandemic has changed the way we celebrate milestones. Another example: Marking a 100th birthday.

On Sunday, Dec. 29, family and friends honored Hazel Bell Madden Sherwood in the parking lot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on 228th Street SW. Well-wishers passed Hazel, sitting in her easy chair – her "throne" – while sharing memories and virtual hugs in advance of her actual birthday, Dec. 2.

They shared something sweet, too. Each car received Hershey bars.

Hazel loves chocolate. Asked the obligatory what's-your-secret question, she said, "I've never had...
