Lightning strikes Puyallup ferry in Edmonds

A ferry worker cleans up in the Edmonds ferry terminal after a lightning blast knocked out some of the ceiling lights.

The ferry Puyallup was out of service Saturday, Oct. 10, after it was struck by lightning near the ferry dock, according to Diane Rhodes with the Washington State Ferries.

No one was injured on the ferry, Rhodes said, but the lightning affected the navigation system, and the Coast Guard said the ferry stayed docked after nightfall until the system could be repaired.

The Edmonds passenger building was also hit by lightning, and one of the terminal employees by the overhead loading ramp was knocked to her knees due to the explosive shock wave, said ferries spokesman Ian Sterling.
