Mayor names Acting Chief Jim Lawless new police chief

Jim Lawless has been selected by Mayor Mike Nelson to be Edmonds' new police chief. He spoke to media with Nelson last month after Nelson about the city's new stay-at-home order.

Four months after Edmonds Mayor Mike Nelson launched a recruitment process for a police chief to succeed retiring Chief Al Compaan, he has settled on someone who is already familiar with the position: Acting Police Chief Jim Lawless.

The move is pending City Council confirmation.

"One measure of a person's worth is how they perform during a crisis," Nelson said in a news release.

"This has been a crisis like no other. Acting Chief Lawless has been a steady, firm hand during a time of uncertainty. I can't imagine a person better suited for this job than Jim."
