Legislation ranges from increased minimum wage to updated car-seat rules

Five important laws that went into effect Jan. 1 covers minimum wage, family leave, tobacco, car seats, and road rules.

Gov. Jay Inslee signed each of the measures over the course of various legislative sessions in past years.

Minimum wage increase

The minimum wage in Washington state increased from $12 to $13.50 an hour. In 2016, Washington voters approved Initiative 1433, which required the statewide minimum wage in 2017 to go up from $11 to $11.50 in 2018, to $12 in 2019, and to $13.50 in 2020.
