Three years ago, I thought I was so smart.
It was a bad year, that one. Not only did a presidential election roil us in 2016, unleashing spasms of disbelief and nastiness, but we lost a bunch of people along the way. Beginning with the deaths of actor Alan Rickman and then David Bowie, we were reeling from January on. Muhammed Ali. Prince. Gene Wilder, George Martin, Garry Shandling. Leonard Cohen. It was awful.
So when Zsa-Zsa Gabor died in mid-December of 2016, I made a joke. I meant no disrespect to Ms. Gabor, whose celebrity baffled me but who lived an apparently rich and very long life...
