My dad gave up driving – all by himself – at age 97.
What took him so long? Prior to this step toward dependence – on me – he had refused to enter into any conversations about lightening the responsibilities of my parents' independence in their own home, even to refuse help with the cleaning and cooking, most of which Mom did alone.
Fiercely independent, despite what I could observe of my mother's increasing forgetfulness, he refused any discussions of moving to a retirement home, where my mother would have had less responsibility for groceries, food preparation, house cleaning, l...
