My mother was fond of saying, “There’s nothing as certain as change.”
Probably some famous person first said that. As far as I’m concerned, it was original with my mother. From her clear voice, I sensed that “change” was a proper noun, a sort of presence, keeping an eye on my schedules, my plans, my assumptions, waiting to act.
Not a negative presence, only a reminder that whatever plans I had for the moment or day or week – or life – might well turn out differently than I had in mind.
