It was a special day in my family when the diaries arrived. At some point in the 1970s, we were sent little journals from Nielsen Media Research to manually record what we watched on TV. For one glorious week, we were a Nielsen family.
It was a big deal, although I’m trying to make it sound bigger. I’m not sure any of us actually filled those diaries out. I do remember that each one had a couple of quarters taped to it, micropayments for helping America decide what to watch.
