Relays shaping up well for Edmonds-Woodway | Girls swimming

Edmonds-Woodway's Elisa Park swims the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay.

A talented Kamiak squad wasn't the only obstacle the Edmonds-Woodway girls swim team faced in its second meet of the season.

Some type of cold or flu bug that hit the school resulted in the absence of almost half of their team and contributed to a 112-57 loss to the Knights in a Wesco South meet Thursday, Sept. 19, at Lynnwood Pool.

First-year Edmonds-Woodway coach Michael Lesaca noted that the Warriors did have some solid performances.

"We had some PRs (personal records)," said Lesaca, who previously was an assistant coach for the Edmonds-Woodway boys and the Mountlake Terrace girls teams. "The individual times were great. The score was what it was."

Co-captain Alexis Song won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 6.82 seconds, easily a district cut. Song also took second place in the 200 individual medley with another district time of 2:31.84.

Song and teammates Reiden Emery, Haleia Naikovu and co-captain Elisa Park finished first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:55.63.

Park captured the 50 freestyle in 28.88, .38 seconds off a district cut. Emery took second in the 100 freestyle.

Coming into the season, Lesaca noted the 200 medley relay team had three strong returning members Amelia Rees (backstroke), Song (butterfly) and Park (freestyle) and were just missing someone who could do the breaststroke. The arrival of freshman Paige Oliver, who missed the Kamiak meet, solved the problem.

"The 200 medley relay is looking good because Paige is a really strong in the breaststroke," Lesaca said. "That was our hole. It's great to have that filled."

Park, Rees, Song and ex-teammate Angella Kim formed a successful 400 freestyle relay team that advanced to last year's state championships.

"I'm hoping to finish with a strong polished team and get a lot of district times," Lesaca said.
