Saturday brunch in downtown Edmonds, and a summer update | Arts & Appetite

A few months ago, this column introduced the eats at the Garden Market, the precursor to the Edmonds Summer Market. Along with the rising temperatures, the Summer Market has expanded to its full size.
The tent of Vespucci Pizza is now at the corner of Fifth and Main, while the food trucks are still staged north of the Edmonds Veterans Plaza. Falafel Salam was busy, as usual, and Los Chilangos was taking a week off on Saturday.
Just a few steps before Falafel Salam was Drummin’ Up Wontons. The tent was buzzing with orders for its delicious array of savory and sweet wontons, fried to perfection.
I saw more people happily eating their mac and cheese (with bacon) wontons than any other of their creative menu, but the jalapeno popper seemed popular, too.
Across from the wonton tent were two other very tempting options: Snohomish Bakery, with at least a dozen baskets of grab-and-go items (corn muffins, snickerdoodles, cinnamon rolls, and more), and an unnamed donut stand.
These were no ordinary donuts.
They called them mini-donuts, but they looked like beignets that you get in New Orleans, that most delightful ball of fried dough. We also stopped at Colibri ice cream, vowing to return. Their flavors included Strawberry Ribbon, Chai Crumble, Minty Chip, Cookie Ripple, and Mayan Chocolate. Umm yum.
Unfortunately, this Saturday we walked to the market with our dog, the fantastic and very well-behaved Lulu. Unfortunately, the Summer Market does not allow dogs.
This is a controversial stance in our dog-friendly town, but we have adjusted. One of us waits in the plaza with Lulu while the other wanders the market. It keeps us from shopping as much or eating brunch there, but we still love the Edmonds Summer Market.
And there are other great options for brunch in Edmonds with your canine family member.
We chose to meet our friends at Salt & Iron, one of the food businesses owned and operated by the growing food dynasty that is Feedme Hospitality & Restaurant Group. Salt & Iron has a comfortable row of outside seating at the corner of Fourth and Main, where Lulu and any other four-legged friends are welcome to join you while you eat.
They will even bring over a bowl of water, and don’t judge if you slip your pooch a small piece of bacon.
At this point, there are very few items on the brunch menu at Salt & Iron that we have not tried. Friends have ordered the frittatas (steak, seafood, and vegetable ranging from $14 to $16) and raved, but when we go out for brunch, we are looking for those complex breakfast options that we just cannot make ourselves.
Their classics include an eggs benedict ($13) that features a just-right hollandaise that I will clean from the plate, even if I cannot make it through the rest of the very generous serving of eggs and perfectly crispy and tasty breakfast potatoes.
This Saturday, two of us splurged on two specialty versions of the benedictthe Oyster Benedict and the Dungeness Crab Benedict ($17 and $23). The fried oysters and crab cakes are set off with a jalapeno hollandaise that gives the dish an extra edge.
Somehow all of the richness and strong flavors balance as they should, again, with those delightful potatoes. We all coveted the Chicken N’ Grits ($17) when it arrived at the table. Buttermilk popcorn fried chicken over cheesy corn grits with two eggs, jalapeno sausage and corn gravy.
We have tried this a number of times and never been disappointed, just extremely full. This week, my husband got one of his favorites, the Sunny BLTE ($16), with thick cut bacon, lettuce, tomato, and a sunny side eggs on soft, sturdy como loaf with mustard aioli. A few weeks ago, he tried the decadent Chicken Fried Duck Confit yes, tastes as amazing as that indicates.
Even the simple choices, from Avocado Toast with an egg ($9) to sweet Kringle with fresh berries ($7), meet the cravings you often did not know you had.
Did I mention they have a Salt & Iron Bloody Mary ($12) that takes the brunch staple to a new level? Made with a housemade mix, a whole slice of bacon, a prawn, an olive, and lime zest salt, it is a delectable meal in itself!
We are lucky to have the market every summer, and Salt & Iron is destined to be around for a very long time. So regardless of where you feel like eating, we have great brunch options in Edmonds on Saturdays, especially from late June until early October.
