Makenna Dreher is Beacon Publishing’s new intern.
She will be writing stories for the Edmonds, Mukilteo and Mill Creek publications through June.
Dreher, 22, was born and raised in Edmonds and is a senior at the University of Washington, majoring in journalism and political science.
“I am interested in untold stories, human rights, and local politics,” she said. She is minoring in human rights and law, societies and justice.
“I want to learn more about how a newspaper works, and to gain firsthand experience in journalism,” she said. “My parents always subscribed to the Edmonds Beacon, and I grew up appreciating community journalism.”
Through her internship, Dreher will work with Beacon editors to gain interviewing experience, using data in stories, working with a camera, and gaining confidence in meeting deadlines.
“In my career, I want to be a voice for the voiceless by telling the unbiased truth as much as I can, as well as giving a platform to those who don’t have access to use their voice,” Dreher said. “Further, I want to gain experience in journalism and see if it is something I want to pursue as a career.
“Gaining experience at The Beacon will allow me to go into my community and get to know more about its members and the problems the community faces. I want to help inform community members and seek out those not often heard in the media.”
