This could be a big season for the King’s baseball team.

The Knights return eight of nine starters from a team that recorded the program’s best record – 6-9 in the league and 8-14 overall in its brief four-year history.

King’s Jake Beattiger, who has coached the Knights since the start, said this could be a breakthrough season.

“We’re getting to the point where we do have some good talent here,” he said. “We’ve just got to play as a team.”

The Knights did that in their 11-8 season-opening victory over nonconference opponent Vashon Island.

Senior Isaac Hines, one of only two seniors, struck out 11 in five innings of work.

“He threw a gem. He pounded the strike zone for us,” Beattiger said.

King’s offense produced some clutch hits, drew walks and took advantage of Vashon Island errors.

“We were really aggressive on the bases,” Beattiger added. “That’s one thing we try to do – be aggressive and play hard. Take advantage when the mistakes happen by the other. We haven’t done that in years past being a younger team.”

The Knights still are young, but most of the players have varsity experience.

Hines plays multiple key roles. When he’s not pitching, he’s starting at shortstop. He also is the leadoff hitter.

“He’s kind of our spark plug,” Beattiger said.

Other pitchers include junior Tyler Durbin, sophomore Ben Edwards (who’s currently injured) and freshman Gibby Marshall-Inman.

King’s pitching faltered in an 18-0 loss to Bellevue Christian but rebounded in 4-3 loss to University Prep.

“It’s early in the season and some of these guys haven’t thrown in a few months,” Beattiger said.

The new North Sound Conference features some familiar opponents, including Cascade Conference champion Cedar Park Christian and South Whidbey. But 2A Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest both are now in the Wesco 3A.

“It’s definitely a year of high expectations for us,” Beattiger said.
