King's celebrates winning the Bi-District championship Saturday, Nov. 3, at Starfire Sports Complex.

King’s came out fired up in the second half of its Bi-District championship game against Overlake.

The Knights erased a 1-0 deficit with four goals to beat the Owls 4-1 in a 1A girls soccer playoff game Saturday, Nov. 3, at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

Senior Callie Wright tied the score early and senior Sarah Nielsen gave the Knights (17-2 overall) the lead. Sophomore Peri Welch then added two more goals to seal the victory.

“The (Owls) came out really strong. We didn’t come out with the fire,” King’s coach Nicole Gabelein said. “The second half we came with fire and we scored in the third minute.”

Gabelein said that the Knights were playing all right in the first half. The talk at halftime from the coaches revolved on reminding the players that a victory would give King’s a better seed at the state tournament.

“We really wanted to win that game,” Gabelein said. “We really started connecting passes in the midfield a lot better.”

Saturday’s contest wasn’t the first time King’s has trailed at halftime. Gabelein isn’t concerned moving forward.

“They just needed to be reminded why they train and work hard every day,” the King’s coach said.

King’s hosts Vashon Island in a first-round state tournament game on Wednesday, Nov. 7, after the Beacon’s deadline.
