Madrona K-8 students started the 2018-2019 school year in the former Alderwood Middle School building, but they will start 2019 in the new building designed specifically for their program.
The move came after a disagreement between the Edmonds School District and the Olympic View Water and Sewer District.
Olympic View said it was concerned that hooking up to the school’s drainage system would pollute its aquifer, the underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or other materials that groundwater can be extracted from through water wells.
The two parties reached an agreement in early September.
On Sept. 28, a team of Edmonds School District staff, led by Superintendent McDuffy, met with the Madrona staff to discuss the details of the upcoming move and process staff feedback.
A mid-year move is more than simply packing up and moving, McDuffy said.
It also involves reserving large blocks of substitute teachers and custodians, securing the services of movers, and other logistics.
