Seeding changes coming for state basketball, football tournaments

Last updated 6/21/2018 at Noon

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Executive Board agreed to adjust seeding procedures for both the state basketball and state football tournaments during its June 3 meeting.

The Executive Board approved the use of a Football Seeding Committee to seed the 16 allocated teams (eight teams for the 1B classification) into the state tournament bracket. Three committees of 10 members plus one chairman will be formed to analyze the quality of teams, with each committee overseeing two classifications.

Committee members will be selected through an applications process with approval coming from the WIAA Executive Board.

The WIAA State Basketball Tournament will be seeded based on a team’s finish in the RPI. On a recommendation from the RPI Committee, the Exexcutive Board voted to change the RPI formula to a 40-40-20 model (40 percent winning percentage + 40 percent opponents’ winning percentage + 20 percent opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage).
