Police shoot rubber bullets at naked man armed with axes

April 11, 2018

The Golden West motel parking lot was littered with debris.

A wild confrontation with Edmonds police ended with a naked suspect in custody.

At about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, police responded to the Golden West motel in the 23900 block of Highway 99 in what would be a two-hour standoff with a suspect later identified as a 35-year-old Everett man.

According to Sgt. Shane Hawley, the suspect was armed with a crowbar and threatening to kill motel residents. He also broke into a room to go after someone.

When police arrived, he had retreated to his own room and set about destroying the place, including a hot-water heater and stove. He also threw a toilet out a window.

After throwing tools at officers, the officers took cover behind cars in the parking lot, Hawley said.

Along the way, he stripped his clothes off.

The suspect armed himself with three different axes and a knife, threatening to kill officers.

“We had a crisis negotiator trying to work with him to give up,” Hawley said. “We were finally able to subdue him, using two heavy duty (rubber bullets). Once in custody, we got him to the hospital right away.”

Hawley said the suspect will be booked into the Snohomish County Jail, after his hospital visit, for a variety of charges: felony harassment (threats to kill), assaulting an officer, felony level malicious mischief (property damage).
