Carver revs up tree stumps with chainsaws

Chainsaw carver Steve Backus carves an eagle out of a 15-foot tree stump in resident Jan Link’s yard on Aug. 12.

Steve Backus has a gift. With a chainsaw, the local woodcarver can transform tree stumps into art instead of firewood.

For years, Backus has been helping homeowners turn the hazardous but much-loved trees in their yards into one-of-a-kind chainsaw carvings, including some in Mukilteo.

“Stump carving started as an afterthought about 30 years ago, but now it’s become a trend,” he said. “A lot of folks have a personal attachment to their big tree. They don’t want to take it down and grind it up, so they’ll have it carved into something cool.”
