VFW essay winner receives standing ovation on Memorial Day

Olivia Olson, an Edmonds-Woodway High School sophomore, receives a “thank you” from Army veteran Bill Bauer, who served in the Vietnam War, after delivering her award-winning VFW essay on Monday, May 31, at the Edmonds Memorial Day ceremony.

Warning that apathy is a crippling disease that is killing love of country, an Edmonds-Woodway High School sophomore received a standing ovation at the Edmonds Memorial Day ceremony after delivering her winning essay.

As the winner of the Edmonds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8870 Voices for Democracy essay contest, Olson recited her essay, “My Vision for the Future of America,” at the May 31 Memorial Day service at Edmonds Cemetery.
