Sports reporter joins Beacon staff

As many will notice in this week's print edition, there's a new addition to The Beacon – a sports page. As the paper launches into this new territory, there is also a new reporter joining the staff.

Megan Managan will be covering local sports for the paper.

"I'm very excited to bring more sports coverage to the local area,” Managan said. “I'm really looking forward to getting to know the community and learning about the stories there are to share."

Publisher Paul Archipley said Managan will help fill an important hole that has been missing in the Beacon.

“As the community newspaper, we’re focused on bringing our readers the stories that matter to them,” Archipley said. “That, of course, includes youth sports.

“We’re pleased that Megan has joined the Beacon family. She brings years of experience covering local sports, and we encourage readers to send her tips and leads as she gets to know the community better.”

Before joining The Beacon, Managan spent four and a half years as the sports editor and photographer for the weekly newspaper the Mercer Island Reporter.

During her time there, she also worked as the sports editor for the Kirkland Reporter newspaper.

Prior to joining the Reporter staff, Managan was a reporter for the Lake Chelan Mirror in Chelan, Wash.

Managan graduated from Washington State University with her bachelor's degree in journalism in 2007. She served as the editor-in-chief for the WSU yearbook The Chinook and wrote for the Daily Evergreen, the campus newspaper.

Managan grew up outside of Bellingham, Wash., and nows lives in Shoreline.

When she isn't writing or taking pictures of sports, Managan can usually be found watching sports – specifically the Cougs and the Canucks – and has a fondness for the Olympics after getting a chance to cover the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

Readers can email game scores, story ideas and other sports-related items to Megan Managan at reporter@yourbeacon.net and follow her on Twitter @meganmanagan.
