More than a festival – great music... great kids

On behalf of the many student musicians who will entertain you this Saturday, the Rotary Club of Edmonds Daybreakers welcomes you to the 2013 Edmonds Jazz Connection.

The Edmonds Jazz Connection is more than just a festival. For 13 years it has been—as the name implies—a musical connection between students, professional musicians, and the community. Visitors will hear 20 or more groups performing everything from big band classics to modern vocal jazz; some new, some old and everything in between.

Many of the student musicians you will see and hear today have finished at the top of jazz competitions throughout the region and the nation. This year we are especially pleased to welcome home members of the Edmonds Woodway Jazz Band. The band was a top finalist at the 18th Annual Essentially Ellington high school jazz band competition at Lincoln Center, a competition limited to the best 15 bands in America.

This weekend, however, the pressure is off. All our kids will be playing for the sheer fun of making great music before an appreciative audience. And all the performances are free.

Visitors will have the opportunity to donate to help our school music programs—and we urge you to do so—but there is absolutely no obligation. Every cent that is donated goes to support these programs, not only through this singular performance opportunity, but also through scholarships and subsidies for music activities in the schools.

Thank you for coming and for your support. I know you will enjoy “Great Music from Great Kids.”

J.E. “Rock” Roth, 2012-13 President
