Al-Baker Strikes Again
On Friday September 16, 2011, Luxembourg-based Cargolux declined to accept two Boeing 747-8F cargo airplanes that had been scheduled for delivery on Sept. 19 and Sept. 21. Airlines defer or cancel deliveries all the time, so this ordinarily wouldn’t be a big deal in the scheme of things.

Boeing: Lost in Translation?
Seven months ago I reported on the confusion between Arabic and English translations of a speech by Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al-Baker. English headlines reported that Qatar Airways had reaffirmed confidence in the Boeing 787.

Are business-friendly places all dust-bins?
Laurie Kulikowski of TheStreet.com has listed the best and worst states for small business. Kulikowski used data from the Small Business & Entrepreneur Council to achieve the ratings. In December the council had compiled a list of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Their data shows the worst place in the country for small business is the other Washington (D.C.).

Looking back: First decade 21st century
In 1962 Seattle took its first small step onto the world stage with the 21st Century Exposition. The Seattle World Fair tried to imagine what the world would look like. Some of the predictions for the 21st century were wildly inaccurate, but some were prescient.

He said what? It’s all up in the air in Qatar
The headline in the Chicago Sun-Times says, “Qatar Air Sticks by Boeing 787.” The headline in the Everett Herald says, “Qatar Airways sticks with Boeing 787 despite delays.” The headline at KING-5 says, “Qatar Airways sticks by Boeing 787 despite delays.” This all sounds positive.

Who’s running Boeing? Don’t blame accountants
Three weeks ago I speculated on what excuse Boeing would use for the fire in Dreamliner No. 2. The answer: “Engineers have determined that the fault began as either a short circuit or an electrical arc in the P100 power distribution panel, most likely caused by the presence of foreign debris.

Talk about hair-raising! A close call for Boeing
My phone began to ring and emails began to come in shortly after Boeing 787, code ZA002 – the second of six flight-test aircraft in the 787 program – made an emergency landing in Laredo, Texas because of smoke in the cabin.

6th Dreamliner takes to the air (belatedly)
The sixth Boeing 787 Dreamliner took off on its first test flight just about an hour before I began this report. No. 6 arrives in the test fleet at an important point. Test hours have been dropping for months and reached a nadir last week when only 13 hours and 10 minutes of test flights were completed.

Who’s No. 1? No, it’s not Weyerhaeuser
All my life (I am 63) the largest forest products’ company in the Northwest has been Weyerhaeuser. When I thought of wood products, sawmills, forests and tree farms, the name that came to mind was always Weyerhaeuser.

Even best-laid plans may require a revision
After nearly 16 years of existence, the Abarim Snohomish County Stock Index (ASCSI) ends today. The final number is 102.06, only a little above the first index at 87.38. The reason for winding it up now is a practical one. There were six companies in the index when it began on November 21, 1994; if it were to continue, there would only be five companies in the ASCSI by late July.

How safe is the 787? Let’s take a close look
The genie is out of the bottle. Dominic Gates and the Seattle Times released the genie in a recent business article that posed the question: Is the 787, or for that matter the AirBus A350, as survivable as an aluminum airplane in hard landings or crashes?
