Thomas Broughton, MD: 1937-2023

On Sunday, November 12, Thomas passed away at home in Edmonds, two days before his 86th birthday. Tom was born to Roberta (Brown) Broughton and Cecil Wheatley Broughton. He attended Laurelhurst Elementary, John Marshall and Eckstein Junior Highs, Roosevelt High School, and Crystal Lake HS.

He attended the University of Washington for undergraduate and medical school. He was Chief Resident of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado, Denver.

He married Margaret Bovingdon in 1964 and served as an Air Force physician in Cambridge, England. His daughter Elizabeth Wheatley Broughton (spouse Sten Sorby) was born in England. Later, Thomas did a second residency in Rochester, N.Y.

He was a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar and faculty member at the UW School of Medicine, Psychiatry. Dr. Broughton started a private practice in Seattle. In 1977, Tom married Stephanie Zimmerman, having two children, Sarah Broughton (spouse Jeff Rasnake) and Jonathon Thomas Broughton.

In addition to his private practice, he helped develop, as a consultant with Tribal Leaders, Mental Health Care systems in Warm Springs, MT, Neah Bay WA, Tulalip, WA, and Warm Springs, OR. Tom also initiated the mental health component of El Centro De La Rasa.

Tom was an avid boater, gardener, bird enthusiast, home chef, traveler, and art collector.

He is survived by his wife; three children; five grandchildren (Olin and Bergen Sorby, Quenton, Laurel, and Reuben Rasnake); two sisters (Ann Milliman and Joan Broughton); two nieces; and two nephews.

He was a beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, and community participant whose loss is felt by many.
