Joan Marian Zoffel, a member of the "Greatest Generation," passed away on June 14, 2023, in Edmonds, at the age of 91. She was surrounded by her three daughters (Barbara, Susan, and Nancy) when she went to be with the Lord.
Joan was born on September 29, 1931, in Seattle at Providence Hospital, to George and Margaret Zoffel. Joan's life was marked by her devotion to her family, her strong faith, and her love for golfing, friends, and Bible Study Fellowship.
She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1949 and went on to work at Sumner City Hall, Bates Technical College, Battelle Research Center, and Zevenbergen Capital Investments, leaving a positive impact in each of these positions.
She is survived by her three daughters: Barbara (Peter) Krengel; Susan (Herb) Albin; and Nancy (John) Zevenbergen. Joan was also blessed with seven grandchildren: Stuart (Jenn) Krengel, John (Jackie) Zevenbergen, Hayley (Joe) Dennison, Lillian (Michael) Vautour, Anna (Jon) Tung, Louise (Mathis) Jessen, and Hillary (Alex) Kilby.
In addition, she had fifteen great-grandchildren: John V, Wyatt, Broderick, Elke, Cooper, Ezekiel, Eleanor, Henrik, Oliver, August, Samson, Gwenivere, Otto, Rosalie, and Nancy Louise. Joan also leaves behind her sisters Carol Sanford and Judy Goodwin, and sister-in-law Marlene Zoffel.
She was preceded in death by her brother, George Zoffel, and brother-in-law Craig Goodwin.
Joan's passion for her family and sport was immeasurable, and she traveled the country to attend soccer games, swim meets, basketball games, and rowing events, spanning generations. She made every possible family life event whether it was a graduation, musical recital, or wedding.
She instilled in her family a love for golf, sharing her expertise and creating lasting memories on the course, including a hole-in-one! Joan was also an excellent seamstress, talented dancer, and cook, with her lemon meringue pie recipe coveted by all those lucky enough to taste it.
Her infectious smile, joyful spirit, and mischievous twinkle in her eye were evident during a lively game of Scrabble with her daughters or when smuggling cheese to a family pet. The light and humor she brought to the world will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life and reception to honor Joan will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023, at 11 a.m. at North Sound Church, located at 404 Bell Street, Edmonds.
All those who knew and loved Joan are invited to attend and pay their respects. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Continuum Hospice and Sunrise Senior Living in Edmonds for the exceptional care and support they provided to Joan during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Joan's memory to two organizations that held special significance to her: Camp McCullough, a ministry of Tacoma First Presbyterian Church where Joan attended for many years, and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
