Desmond “Ted” Neff: 1932-2023

Posted

Desmond “Ted” Ne passed peacefully on Sept. 27, 2023. He was born in Burbank, California, on February 4, 1932.

Ted was a standout athlete at Edmonds High School, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. He graduated in 1950 after leading the football team to an undefeated 9-0 season and garnering 1st Team All-State recognition.

In the spring of 1951, Ted said
yes to Beverly Bienz for a “Ladies
Choice” at a Masonic Lodge dance
and they never looked back. Married in August, they moved to Pullman where Ted completed his under- graduate studies.

Ted and Bev moved back to Edmonds and Ted attended the University of Washington Dental School, finishing in 1959. “Dr. Ne ” practiced dentistry for nearly 40 years, earning a reputation for his easygoing demeanor and gentle approach. This reputation came as a surprise to those who played basketball with Ted in men’s leagues, which he continued to do into his 80s.

Ted and Bev had 64 years together, sharing love and support with their family – five children and numerous grand and great-grandchildren – and countless friends.

Ted was a diehard Husky. A football season ticket holder for over 40 years, he enjoyed attending games into his 90th year.

Ted found ways to give back to his community without seeking recognition or credit. This included serving on the Edmonds School Board and volunteering for low-income dental clinics in Snohomish County.

His hobbies stretched across basket weaving, gardening, baking and carpentry. He could weave a pencil holder or build a house – which he did with friends and family. The resulting lake cabin became a cherished site of many gatherings.

He will be remembered as a great storyteller, devoted friend, dedicated citizen, and professional cookie eater. A loving family man, he could be stoic but was also liable to shed a tear over a sentimental card or a warm moment with family.

Ted cared unwaveringly for Bev as she battled cancer for many years. He attended countless sporting events of his children and grandchildren and was a constant steadying presence in the lives of many. The void left by his passing is a testament to the love and care with which he lived his life.

Ted is survived by his brothers Rodney and Mike (Vernee) Ne; children Linda (Darryl) Berg, Ted (Stephanie) Ne, Janis (Jim) Ne Warner and Stacie Ne; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Eldest daughter Debbie (Andy) Breech passed two months after her father.

His celebration of life will be held on Feb. 3, 2024 at 1 p.m. at Edmonds United Methodist Church at 828 Caspers St., and streamed online at www.edmondsumc.org/memorial-service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edmonds Food Bank.
