Captain John Holmberg was born on Oct. 5, 1931, to John Holmberg Sr. and Sophie Anderson in Unalaska Alaska.
Dad and his wife Mary Lena had six children, including one of hers that he raised as his own.
When he was 5, John moved to Sanak, Alaska, where he attended a one-room school.
He ran his father's fishing boat at the age of 17, becoming a young commercial fisherman. As he grew older, Dad joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. While he was in Anchorage, he was a plane mechanic. John then went to school to become an airplane pilot for Alaska Airlines. He completed his course, passed, and took the vision course, which he didn't pass because he was color blind.
Dad became a lifelong commercial fisherman in the Shumagin Islands in the Aleutians Islands of Alaska.
Dad resided in Edmonds, Washington, since 1974.
His hobbies were flying remote airplanes, sports fishing, traveling around the country, and having property in Boulder City, Nevada. He and Mom would frequently stay there for months at a time.
Residing in Edmonds for years, his daily schedule was to go to the Salish Sea by the dog park with his partner in crime, "Fluffy." There, he would walk or sit in his car for hours.
This is where he had a car accident and he became ill. He passed away from complications on March 23, 2023.
There will be a bench placed at the Salish Park beach for Captain John.
Services will be at Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills Funeral Home & Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Nov. 6, 2023.
