The award winning Edmonds-Woodway High School Drill and Pom Team hosts
its fifth annual competition Saturday, Jan. 16 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. in the EWHS
gym.
This year's competition is one of the largest in Western Washington
with teams traveling from Bellingham to Vancouver to participate.
In addition to year-round dedication to training and competition, the
EWHS Drill & Pom team is actively involved in community service. In
support of families of fallen peace officers this year the team is donating ten
percent of proceeds to Behind the Badge Foundation http://www.behindthebadgefoundation.org/.
Behind the Badge Foundation is dedicated to better serving law
enforcement families and their agencies.
Participants will compete in several categories including drill, pom,
hip-hop, kick, dance, flag and prop.
Please come enjoy the precise movements of drill, the fluidity of pom,
the edgy beat of hip-hop dancers, the grace of jazz, the showiness of kick and
the excitement of flag and prop teams.
All teams perform to a specific set of standards per category and must
complete each segment within a set period of time.
Professional judges score each team. The teams compete for trophies and
their scores compile with those earned from other local and regional
competitions in an effort to qualify for the State Competition held each spring
at Yakima's Sun Dome.
"Our school
presents a high profile competition each year, but the 2010 performance is a
record setter. We have 22 teams registered and a total of 36 performances! We
are at absolute maximum capacity and are looking forward to showcasing the hard
work of these young men and women," stated Coach Deb Johnson. "This
is the premier event for our hardworking team. They begin working for this in
July. Team members and parents plan for months to make this a thrilling event
to remember."
The EWHS Little
Drillers will perform that day after attending a fun, intensive and educational
clinic on drill, pom and team building techniques.
Concessions will
be served all day. This year the team features an assortment of delicious hot
and cold snack and lunch items served throughout the day from vendors such as
Fred Meyer, Costco, Azteca, QFC, Seattle Bagel, Petschl's Quality Meats,
Pizza Hut and more.
Commemorative
t-shirts and sweatshirts, flowers and customized "shout outs" will be
sold. Shout outs and flowers (flowers donated by QFC Westgate in Edmonds) will
be delivered throughout the day to dance boys and girls with a special message
from family and friends.
The competition's
location is the Edmonds Woodway High School Gym, 7600 212th Street SW, Edmonds.
Admission is: $7; $5 for students and senior citizens.
