The Evergreen State Fair and Snohomish County’s Economic Development Division will sponsor its 2nd annual wine competition for commercial and amateur winemakers from Western Washington with grapes grown and processed in Western Washington.
Judges will award medals to the best wines in the commercial and amateur categories. The wine judging's intent is to recognize and promote the achievement of western Washington produced wines.
“We were overwhelmed with entries last year, indicating that this is an ever-growing niche market in our local agricultural industry,” said Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.
“Winemaking in Snohomish County may only be a small part of the region’s farming history, but there is still a dedication and devotion to the craft to be found there.”
All wines must be made 100 percent from grapes grown, processed and produced in Western Washington. Fermenting (or processing) of skins (or pomace) from Eastern Washington grapes is not allowed.
Winemakers should enter varietals under a varietal category, where 75 percent constitutes a varietal wine. Two wines of the same varietal will constitute a category.
Any wine not fitting a category should be submitted under “Other Varietal Blend” according to color.
In the commercial category, all wines must be available for sale on and following Aug. 16, the date of the judging. For amateur winemakers considering a commercial operation, the contest is an opportunity to gather input and recommendations from a professional panel of judges.
Categories for white wines will include Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe, Muller-Thurgau, white blends and other white varietals.
Reds will include Rose (varietal and blends), Pinot Noir, red blends and other red varietals.
Judges also will consider sparkling wines. No other fruit wines are allowed. Entry forms must be postmarked by July 23 and include the entry fee ($40 for commercial entries, $15 for amateur entries).
Wine entries forms should be sent to Linda Neunzig, Snohomish County Economic Development M/S 411, 3000 Rockefeller Ave, Everett, WA 98201. Wines should be delivered to Columbia Winery 14030 NE 145th St Woodinville, WA 98072-6994 and must be received by July 30.
Judging will be held Aug. 16 at Russell’s in Bothell with the awards ceremony to be held Sept. 4 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe. Winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals. Best-of-show winners also will be selected.
