Former Edmonds Mayor and newly-appointed Snohomish County Deputy Executive Gary Haakenson announced his formal endorsement of 1st Legislative District Candidate Vince DeMiero (D) of Brier.

"Vince DeMiero isn't your typical candidate. He comes from a family of public servants and has three decades of real-world experience with teaching, coaching and raising children in our community," Haakenson said. "Vince is exactly the kind of representative we need in Olympia, and I'm proud to lend my support."

DeMiero, a 22-year veteran educator at Mountlake Terrace High School and 33-year resident of the 1st Legislative District, has had a groundswell of public support for his campaign since announcing his candidacy to fill the seat left empty by Al O'Brien this fall.

Haakenson's endorsement will add to the recent good news for DeMiero, who earlier this week, received a "Very Good" rating from the Municipal League of Seattle/King County, besting his Democratic opponent and three Republicans vying for the same seat.

Further community support for DeMiero's campaign has also been evident in recent fundraising with donations topping $6900 in the last four weeks, the highest of all candidates, with over 90 percent coming from more than 130 individual donors.

Haakenson, who has been a notable figure in local government since his election to the Edmonds City Council in 1996, will join the growing list of endorsements that include the Edmonds Education Association, People for Healthy and Safe Communities and the Washington State Chiropractic Association.

DeMiero has also been endorsed by dozens of respected community leaders including former Washington State Representative and Port Townsend Mayor Barney McClure and former Washington State Representative and Snohomish County Council member Barbara (Cothern) Hawksford.

DeMiero has also received a 100 percent pro-choice rating from NARAL Pro-Choice Washington and endorsements from more than 100 area educators, current and former students and members of the community.
